History of Alpha Phi

Alpha Phi Creed

In September of 1872, Martha Foote, Kate Hogoboom and Clara Sittser I believe in my Fraternity.
gathered one afternoon to discuss
the problems facing the first college women entering Syracuse University. I believe in the friendships made
Feeling that their presence in the classroom was unwelcome, in the springtime of my youth
that their position in this experiment of coeducation was by no means secure and I believe in its high ideals
having witnessed the solidarity of the fraternities, they asked which lift me up beyond myself.
"Why can't we have a society as well as the men?"...
and Alpha Phi Fraternity was born! I believe in its earnest drive for good scholarship,
  moral character, and genuine culture.
The first chapter meeting took place on September 18, 1872.
On September 30, 1872, at the home of Ida Gilbert, I believe in it as a shrine of
TEN WOMEN founded Alpha Phi with the first initiation ceremony! international sisterhood wherein
I may find love and loyalty
Those brave TEN women were: sympathy and understanding, inspiration
Clara Bradley Burdette and opportunity.
Florence Childester Lukens
Martha Foote Crow I believe in it as a creator of good citizenship,
Ida Gilbert Houghton helping me to do my work well,
Jane Higham to live in harmony with others, and
Kate Hogoboom Gilbert to serve my country and to trust in God.
Elizabeth Hubbell Shults
Rena Michaels Atchison I believe in my Fraternity.
Louise Shepard Hancock I believe in Alpha Phi.
